I don’t know if any of you are like me, but when I get told something, so often I’ll think, “No, I’m not like that”. Yet, when I take a moment to really look at myself, that’s when some realizations are made. In our training sessions, you will do different things like play games and complete exercises. Some of the exercises will be on your own, some of them will be with one other person or in a group of people. We do this to help bring an awareness to oneself. On a day-to-day basis whether it be at home or at work, we need to be asking ourselves; why am I doing the things that I’m doing?
Have any of you ever recorded yourself? You know back in the day when someone called and you did a recording. Then you would hit play and listen to yourself talk. Didn’t it sound totally different than you, thought you sounded?
If you have not recorded your voice, perhaps you play sports and have recorded yourself in a game or practice. In your mind, you think that you’re doing it a certain way, yet when you play it back, it looks totally different.
Both my boys play hockey. When they were much younger, we took them to this camp to improve their hockey and skating skills. My husband Bill and I would tell them, “Maybe you should do this,” or, “Hold your stick like that”. In their mind they were thinking; “Well, that is what I do,” and we would have to say, “No, honey, that’s not what you do.” At one point, we took them to this camp. The camp leaders videotaped their activities. They videotaped them skating and taking shots. When our boys actually got to watch themselves in action, you should have seen the look on their faces. Because, in their minds, they were thinking that they were doing it one way when in actuality they weren’t. It wasn’t until they saw themselves that they were able to make the necessary corrections.
What do you reflect back into the world?
The same concept applies to our lives. How we show up in our relationships and connections with the outside world. Whether it is in your personal or professional life, we need to look deeper than the surface. Checking our reflection to see if we like what we are mirroring on the outside. Truly taking a look at what you’re doing on a day-to-day basis will really support you in getting clarity around that.
